Youth Group Swim Lessons
Sessions held seasonally. Please register at the Sports Core Reception Desk. Key elements in providing your child the tools for success in our program include:
The ideal age to begin the Learn to Swim program is age 5. Beginning this fall, we will offer a "transition" class for children ages 3-5. This class helps children prepare for the group swim lessons per level structure.
The Level structure is designed for students to advance per year (vs. per session) with continuous instruction. Our levels are not designed with pass/fail outcomes. It is not uncommon for students to stay at a particular level for up to a year or longer.
The prerequisite for each level is the successful demonstration of the skills from the preceding level, except for level I, which has no prerequisite. Each level of our swim program includes training in basic water safety and helping a swimmer in distress. Below is a brief description of each level and what is included. For more detailed information, please call Sports Core and ask about our Youth Group Swim Lessons.
Level 1 Introduction to Water Skills
Purpose: Helps student feel comfortable in the water. Class includes learning how to enter & exit the water safely, swim on front and back using arm & leg actions, submerge mouth, nose and eyes, follow basic water safety rules, etc.
Level 2 Fundamental Aquatic Skills
Purpose: Gives students success with fundamental skills including opening eyes under water, swimming on side, tread water using arm and leg motions, swim on front and back using combined strokes and more.
Level 3 Stroke Development
Purpose: Builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guided practice. Includes butterfly, dive from kneeling or standing position, rotary breathing, front and back crawl, front and back glide and more.
Level 4 Stroke Improvement
Purpose: Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Includes shallow dive, open turns from any stoke, swim underwater, care for conscious choking victim, breaststroke, elementary backstroke, butterfly and more.
Level 5 Stroke Refinement
Purpose: Provides further coordination and refinement of strokes. Includes survival swimming, rescue breathing, diving, gliding, turns, backstroke flip turn, tuck surface dive, front and back crawl, sidestroke, and much more.
Level 6 Swimming and Skill Proficiency
Purpose: Refines the strokes so students swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with "menu" options that focus on preparing students to participate in more advanced courses, including the Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Training courses.
